This interesting article comes via the London times which posits the question – if you have an iPhone will you ever need a travel guidebook again?

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life — said a fellow who clearly hadn’t spent the entire day road-testing the latest travel apps for the capital on his iPhone.

For the uninitiated, “apps” are applications for Apple’s iPhone (although other phone companies, including BlackBerry and Nokia, are now getting in on the act).

Apps range from the useful (recipe cards, mortgage calculators) via the educational (works by Shakespeare, photography guides) to the downright pointless. Do you really need an app that turns your phone into a virtual pint of beer?

One of the fastest growth areas is in travel. From phrasebooks to guidebooks, museum-finders to cab-finders, the options are limitless — and most cost only 59p. But are they any good? And could they ever replace the traditional guidebook?

As much as I like relying on my iPhone while traveling, it can’t completely replace a really good guidebook. So, it’s safe to take a multi-pronged approach – bring iPhone apps and good guidebooks when traveling.

How to you take a screenshot of your iPhone?

I get asked this question quite a bit and it has a pretty easy answer.

Why would you need to take a screenshot?

You may want to record something on your screen for later, share an image from an app or share what your iPhone home screen looks like. If you’re having a problem with an app, you can screenshot the error your getting and send it to the developer. There are many reasons to do it – it’s just another fun and useful tool on your iPhone.

Process to take an iPhone Screenshot:

1. Hold Down Sleep Button and Home Button as the same time
2. Screen will flash White
3. Image is saved to your Images as a .png
4. E-mail or download to your computer like any other image

11 Most Useful Free iPhone Apps

I’ve had iPhone 2.0 software installed for almost a month now and overall, I’ve been very pleased with it.

The range of applications available has been impressive, especially the free ones. I have generally avoided paying for any apps. Now that I’ve had many of them for almost a month, I’ve compiled a list of what I think are the 11 best free iPhone Apps. Feel free to chime in with your favorites in the comments!

1. Evernote

Evernote is pretty much the perfect note taking solution. The most useful feature is that you can sync over the air to the desktop Evernote client, which is also free. It’s completely changed the way I take notes and manage productivity. I like suing a whiteboard to brainstorm so I can take a picture of what I’ve done, upload it to Evernote, erase the board and brainstorm other stuff. There’s a usage quota for the free service, but I haven’t gotten anywhere near using it up.

2. NetNewsWire

The best of the RSS programs by far. The best part is you can manage your feeds online. It’s perfect for the morning and afternoon trips to the bathroom, let’s you read all your feeds quickly and easily.

3. Wordpress

This app is going to revolutionize blogging. You can now do it from anywhere. I’ve used it to start a mobile photoblog as well at start drafts of ideas I have for writing later at the computer. It’s a little buggy right now, but a recent update seemed to fix a lot of them.

I hate Twitter. But this is the best program out there for tracking your friends. The interface is simple and easy to use.

5. PangeaVR

I love to travel and I love looking at 360 degree panoramas from all over the world. Great for dreaming. I love the selection of panoramas from Great Britain. It’s like having a walk in the British Countryside in my pocket on command.

6. Moonlite Mahjong

I love Mahjong and I’m glad someone came up with a free game to play. The gameplay is pretty barebones (it doesn’t even keep score) but it’s still great for exercising the mind.

7. eReader

Released by Fictionwise, a pioneer in eBooks. A great little e-reader. Perfect for turning the iPhone into a full fledged eBook. It can get a little trying reading staring at the LCD for long periods of time, but it’s great for short bursts. And Fictionwise has a fantastic selection of eBooks to choose from. You can also import eBooks in other formats.

8. CubeRunner

The graphics aren’t great but this game is actually pretty fun, and very hard. Perfect for those morning bathroom breaks when you’re done reading NewsNewWire.

I think this is the better of the Movie programs on offer. Showtimes is too gimmicky. It appears, though, that Apple didn’t think so and this App has been pulled from the store. Damn shame. But they’re never going to get it off my phone.

Weatherbug

This one is a no brainer. The weather app included with the phone has always been pretty much useless. This provides the best weather data and forecasts. The radar is incredibly useful and the live cameras are fun to watch.
